Lahana Resort Phu Quoc | Independent Review

First published February 2022 | Words and photos by Vietnam Coracle

In lush grounds on a hillside, Lahana is one of the most tasteful and well-designed mid-range resorts on Phu Quoc Island. The reason it doesn’t get much attention is simple: it’s not on the beach. In fact, Lahana Resort is just a 5-minute walk from the sea, and this is probably a good thing, because if it were on the waterfont, the prices would be a lot higher. Lahana makes up for its lack of beach with a gorgeous infinity pool at the top of the property with views out over the sea. Rooms are very tasteful and comfortable, and the resort in general is well-built and well-designed. Using locally-sourced building materials and constructing around existing trees where possible, Lahana is very green and peaceful.

The Location: Just south of Dương Đông town and adjacent to Long Beach, Lahana Resort is located on a lush, tree-studded hillside overlooking the ocean on the central-west coast of the island. Accessed by a narrow concrete lane from Trần Hưng Đạo Street, Lahana is within easy walking distance of the shops, cafes, beach bars and restaurants on the main drag, but far enough away that the resort itself is blissfully quiet. Unlike the resorts on the beach, Lahana echoes to the sounds of leaves rustling in the breeze and birds singing in the trees: it feels more like a mountain retreat than a beach resort. Nevertheless, the sands of Long Beach are just a 5-minute walk away. By taxi, the airport is 10 minutes away, the town 5 minutes, and the rest of the island is easily accessible via Phu Quoc’s excellent road network.

Resort Grounds & Layout: Built on a steep slope, Lahana is surrounded by protected forest. A relatively small resort, Lahana’s rooms and bungalows are dotted around extensive gardens, trees, fish ponds and lawns. The entrance is an impressive vaulted bamboo structure, behind which a steep lane winds up the hillside with stone pathways leading off it, twisting through the gardens to each room. No structure is more than two storeys, and all buildings fade into the foliage that surrounds them. Electric buggies ferry guests up and down the lane to their rooms, the swimming pool and restaurant (the latter two are at the top of the property). Buildings are a mix of stone, concrete, wood and thatch, all of which are in muted, pale beige tones. The gardens are perfumed with the scent of frangipani trees.

Pools & Activities: Because Lahana is on the ‘wrong’ side of the seafront road, it doesn’t have direct access to the beach. However, the resort makes up for this with a fabulous infinity pool at the top of the property overlooking the hillside, trees, and out to sea. The pool is highly photogenic, but it’s not just a prop for social media: it’s also long enough for swimming laps. Beneath the pool is an airy, open-sided gym, billiard room, kids corner and conference centre, all of which are tastefully designed. There’s also a spa. The gardens are pleasant to walk around: identifying the tropical flowers and trees, and stopping on the benches under wooden gazebos to watch the carp in the pools. The sands of Long Beach are just a 5-minute walk west of Lahana, across Trần Hưng Đạo Street. Motorbikes are available for rent or the resort can organize numerous excursions around the island.

Guest Rooms & Décor: All rooms at Lahana are restrained, minimally furnished and tastefully decorated. There’s lots of wood, lamps, space, light, terraces, and the usual mid-range amenities, such as air-con and widescreen T.V. The colour scheme is beige and sandy grey-brown with touches of marine blue here and there. The effect is very controlled, unpretentious but comfortable and cosy. Personally, I felt very at home at Lahana. There are several room types, but they essentially boil down to ‘rooms’ or bungalows’. The former are cheaper, smaller, and lack bathtubs, generally located near the bottom of the hill with views over the garden and trees; the latter are larger and more expensive, with impressive outdoor bathrooms (shower and bathtub), higher up the hill with terraces looking over the property and in close proximity to the pool and restaurant. If you can, book a bungalow. Something Lahana has done that most resorts neglect to do, is fit the windows and doors in the outside bathroom with netted grilles, which means you can enjoy a bath with the fresh air and natural sounds from outside, but without a cloud of mosquitoes getting inside.

Breakfast, Dining & Drinking: Lahana only has one restaurant and bar: the Ca Go is located at the top of the hillside overlooking the infinity pool. A pleasant, open-sided structure with arches leading onto a patio and a thatched roof, the building is rather more impressive that the quality of food and drink available. A buffet breakfast is included in the room price, and the quality is fine, but nothing special. There’s usually a daily happy hour at sunset, but when I was there, due to the pandemic, the bar and restaurant closed at 5pm, so I wasn’t able to try the drinks or dinner. There are also plenty of dining options nearby the resort: either on Trần Hưng Đạo Street or in Dương Đông town.

Summary: Lahana is an excellent mid-range resort. I love the style, the layout, the foliage, the rooms, and the general atmosphere. Staff at reception are incredibly warm and helpful. The infinity pool is one of the best on the island. There’s nothing pretentious or showy about Lahana: it’s just a well-made, tasteful, cosy resort. The only ‘problem’ is that it doesn’t have direct beach access. But if you wanted to find this standard of accommodation on the beach, you’d pay nearly double the price.

    hi there Tom

that looks like my kind of place to relax …. very attractive understated and comfortable look

but, given you have been ensconced on Phu Quoc for so long now, just what is the BEST (iyo) place to stay for a relaxed comfortable and enjoyable stay for a week (say)?

ie how would you compare them all and come up with the most enjoyable, comfortable, and relaxing place?

    kind regards

      Hi Don,

The best place to stay really depends on your personal tastes and also time of year: From November to May the west coast is perfect, but from June to October the south and east coasts are better.

I suggest you browse all my Phu Quoc accommodation reviews on this page to get an idea of what’s available and what appeals to you the most.

      Best,

      Tom
